Export Resources For US-Based Businesses

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

There is a tremendous amount of assistance available small to mid-sized U.S. businesses which manufacture commodities (especially durable business or consumer goods) and wish to export them to other countries. Most of these resources are provided by U.S. governmental agencies (SBA, EX-IM Bank, FCIA, OPIC , USAID, and numerous others), the United Nations (through a variety of trade and project development programs, and through a number of NGOs) the representative agencies, embassies and consulates of other countries to either the U.S. or to the U.N., which are primarily located in New York City or Washington, DC.
An article excerpt and link follows from Entrepreneur Magazine  which candidly assesses some of the real-world challenges in dealing with export:

---------------
The best place to start is by clicking on each of the above links to find out what these different organizations do, and then by Googling to find further information and directories of the providers of these services. They are best contacted at first via email, with a telephone call to follow, and then (phew) with an email to follow. In every case, you must get an individual contact's name at an organization, or you'll make very little progress. Usually, you'll find yourself repeating the same questions over and over again to people who will put you on hold and never reappear with any answers. Have a conversation with the right person. The names of these individuals can be found on the websites or in the directories for each branch (many are regionalized) of each organization.

As an additional resource, I've posted some potentially helpful websites and related articles below to further your research. Exporting is not easy - but it can be enormously profitable and is truly worth the investment of time.
Some links and link collections (from Google) worth exploring (please ignore the numbering and irregular margin spacing):

While I do not endorse any of the above organizations or their services, reading about them will provide you with an greatly expanded insight into the export process and possibilities.

There's much more to discuss, and we'll be discussing specific topics relating to export, including aspects of logistics, Customs regulations, tariffs, establishing connections, trade financing, project financing, international credit guaranties, purchase order financing, terms of trade, documentation, trade instruments, and flowcharting the whole process.
