The Premium Internationalist Commodity: Business

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

I am fascinated with the notion of any country, state or specialized economic development zones or trade development zone aggressively advertising through the media (and competing with other international venues) in order to bring business to its geographical locus. Some of the things offered are tax holidays, financial assistance, a skilled and motivated labor force, special tariff exemptions or inter-country trade arrangements, and other goodies.

The notion behind Free Trade Zones and Tax-Free Zones in various parts of countries, states or counties (usually near seaports or airports due to their highly advantageous logistics) was to entice businesses from other nations to establish footholds in these zones to open the gates to greater employment, greater technological transfer opportunities and to increased stimulus of the domestic economy through incentives for businesses to 'stay and play'.

All of these competitive bidders for businesses have categorically turned business into a commodity, subject to the laws of supply and demand. The reality of this should be trumpeted at every embassy and consulate of every country in every other country of the world.

Every economy at every level wants this precious Internationalist commodity -- yet this never seems to be an item close to the top of most of these diplomatic outposts (it is certainly [sadly] below intelligence gathering and privileged immune insider deal making).

In the current tempestuous world financial economy, some of the businesses and positions that are springing up include international supply chain management, deal brokering, business brokering, business touting, outsource management and quality control, and logistics -- a business that is as critically indispensable as it is frequently ignored.

What is so fascinating is how much money is being thrown at this slightly nebulous and amorphous commodity, with only [for the most part] well-established heavily- capitalized companies actually responding to it.

Think about this prospect: Why don't these business and economic development agencies and zones hire well-networked "business development ambassadors" to act as agents of introduction in terms of bringing smaller, growing businesses to visit or engage in serious personalized productive exchanges with these government bodies, or vice versa. All this requires is a variation of the private sector business broker model (in a polished form, of course) to be integrated with public sector bodies. The opportunities are vast, and the career possibilities and prospective paydays are the things that great dreams are made of. Why not bring them to life?

Following is some information promoted by Scotland, a country most needful of an influx of productivity to stimulate is troubled economy. Scotland is just one randomly chosen example.

Remember. Give it a second look in terms of a career opportunity.
