In these times of troubled relationships between the entire Arab World and the industrialized west, the escalating violence between Shiite (Shia) and Sunni Arabs, and political divisions between the Arab world with respect to Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah and various smaller but rapidly growing groups eager to fill a growing sense of a power and leadership vacuum, it is critical for any news analyst and any citizen diplomat or Internationalist to understand where the news and influence comes from to the peoples of this vast and strategically important region. An interesting article follows from the American Press Institute (API) which should certainly give us all pause for thought:

Facebook is the third-biggest news source inArab world (journalism.co.uk)
A survey by Northwestern University in Qatar finds Facebook is the third-most used news source after Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya. Two factors that may have affected those results are: (1) the importance of interpersonal sources of news and information in the 10 countries surveyed and (2) the mix of internet penetration, income and literacy rates.

I personally do not care for Facebook (or for Mr. Zuckerberg for that matter), and I use it far less than such social media platforms as LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest. But there can be no disputing the fact that Facebook has the greatest general following amongst non-business users throughout the world. For its mix of features, I believe it is probably the "friendliest" source of comprehensive pedestrian internet communication in the world-at-large.

May I just say what a relief to find an individual who genuinely knows whatt they
ReplyDeleteare talking about on the net. You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and
make it important. More people have to look at this and understand
this side of the story. I was surprised that you are not more popular since you certainly possess the gift.
