Being Careful About The Company That You Keep

Dear Readers:
The information which follows appears courtesy of BigThink. While it should accelerate the heartbeat of every US citizen, the principles involved...history, trustworthiness, loyalty, conflicting agendas, deceitfulness -- should ring true for every citizen or subject in every nation of the world, and for every Internationalist.
---------------
In 2008, journalist Jere Van Dyk spent 45 days as a captive of the Taliban. In his Big Think interview, Van Dyk not only describes the terrifying ordeal but also provides us with a lesson on what every American should know about Afghanistan. Despite the fact that it is the site of America's longest war in history, Van Dyk says Americans know shockingly little about this impoverished country. While Van Dyk was held captive, he was still able learn important information about the interaction between Taliban and Al Qaeda. For instance, despite what the U.S. government says, Van Dyk is confident that Osama bin Laden is no longer hiding in Pakistan's tribal areas. Like former Big Think guest Jim Hoge, Van Dyk also believes Pakistan is not our ally and may have ulterior motives for supporting our war in Afghanistan. Afghans are wary of United States' relationship with Pakistan, says Van Dyk, and this fear must be allayed if the American counterinsurgency strategy is to have any success. "Until such time as we convince them that we're 100 percent on their side and that we're not working with Pakistan, our long-time ally, you will never get the Afghans to go along with you."
