Image representing BlogCatalog as depicted in ...Image via CrunchBase - a tremendous informational resource.

Blog Catalog has recently picked up a number of my articles from my Daily Burst Of Brilliance The Internationalist Page, The Global Futurist and one or two of my other blogs (you can access many of them by clicking on the RSS 3-D style icon below). I want to thank BlogCatalog for honoring me with their re-publication of my material [which is published under decastle or Douglas Castle], and to recommend them as a wonderful directory for fine articles, RSS feeds and other information on a variety of topics. I am also hopeful that they will feature more articles about international commerce, global production and consumer trends, geopolitical economics, citizen ambassadorship and worldwide joint venturing.

If you should chance upon one of my articles on Blog Catalog (henceforth, you'll have to look me up under either under Douglas Castle or DouglasECastle1, my soon-to-be-new-username) when you've gotten to the BlogCatalog site, please re-tweet it or forward it. It might be a wonderful idea if you were to rate the article (they have a 5-star system) as highly as you believe warranted. The greater the number of viewings, the higher the ratings, and the more re-tweets, he more that the subject matter category will become a higher priority focus in their directory.

Lastly, but most importantly, I want to thank my readers and colleagues for your encouragement, inspiration and support -- I am forever in your debt.

Please also Google or otherwise access BlogCatalog to boost their prominence, as they have boosted mine in terms of the causes of worldwide prosperity and peace through increased civilian communications (are you listening, Skype?), import/export, transnational co-venturing, and citizen ambassadorship. This sacred mission cannot be left to international agencies, sovereign governments or mainstream media -- we must use the blogosphere and social media in order to create a shift in destructive zero-sum thinking, and paradigms that are hopelessly outdated. Please continue to help me -- together we can move mountains.

I will give you my spanking new BlogCatalog direct url address as soon as I've received it. The old one will still work, but it will no longer be active -- my contributions will be to the new address.

International Leadership - The New Paradigm - 01.14.2011

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

International Leadership - The New Paradigm at 14th January, 2011

Article from The Internationalist Page (http://TheInternationalistPage.blogspot.com) written by author Douglas Castle, Chairman of TNNWC Group, LLC.

Dear Friends, Futurists, and Internationalists:

During the course of these past three years, the entire world has seen and experienced an economic tsunami, a crisis of trust and faith in the most venerable institutions, and a growing divide between those few powerful persons in positions of authority and those many persons who constitute the masses.

The masses have universally become disenfranchised and distrustful of those in positions of authority and power. The members of the suffering masses are feeling either helpless or restless -- but few are trustful or happy with the status quo.

There is a new tie that binds all of those citizens of The Internationalist Community, The Global Village and the Human species -- we are all sharing a crisis of confidence, and a lack of qualified, trustworthy leaders with vision and true integrity.

There is a high probability that some of those currently in power, those currently insulated and ensconsed within the protective palaces which they have built by the sweat, toil and suffering of the barely-subsisting majority will be displaced within these next one to three years.

New leaders will no longer be able to depend upon sovereignty, patriotism, empty rhetoric and hate-mongering to unite the masses behind them and to keep their power. The Internet, the entropic economy and the mysterious changes in the dynamics of the weather have made those safeguards of bygone times a virtual (pun intended) impossibility.

New leaders, in addition to technological mastery and expert advice, will be required to exhibit qualities which the older, dying "guardians by divine right" have never had to bring to the fore.

New Leadership will have to demonstrate a genuine alignment with the populations for whom they are responsible, as well as those same populations to whom they will now have to be accountable. New leaders will have to serve their followers instead of merely stealing votes and money from them based upon half-truths and blind faith.

There will still be a use for weaponry and shows of military strength -- but these will now have to be tempered with a heartfelt passion for their followers, as well as for the causes, organizations and nations which these leaders will lead. There will be a need for empathy, as well as a desire to dominate and control.

New leaders will be tasked with not only leading, but with caring for their constitutents, adherents and followers. The metaphorical muscle of the heart, long neglected but often abused, will have to be strong in these leaders. In sum:

"The Greatest Leaders Must Have As Deep A Love For Their Followers As They Do For Their Sacred Ideals And Objectives." -- Douglas Castle

My borrowed time here has led me to believe that Love can be a strength as well as a weakness. Do not underestimate its power and role in enlightened leadership. -- DC

Isolationism - A Dangerous Response to Economic and Emotional Depression.

Isolationism - A Dangerous Response to Economic and Emotional Depression.

Note: This article was written by Douglas Castle for THE INTERNATIONALIST PAGE (http://TheInternationalistPage). The author is a Featured Columnist for THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter (a free subscription can be obtained at http://twitlik.com/IN). This article may not be reprinted, reproduced, republished or otherwise transmitted unless it appears in its entirety, with all attribution intact, and all hyperlinks live.

Dear Friends:

The article cited below this brief commentary appeared c/o Yahoo News! and was carried by Associated Press (AP). It is a sad treatise in predictable human behavior. Isolationism breeds incestuous reaffirmation of ill-conceived and inbred ideas; increasing fear of change; decreasing flexibility and adaptability; reduced trading opportunities for economic stimulus; reduced opportunities to find new friends and allies for personal and professional growth in the individuals;  suspicion and resentment amongst those who surround us in the Global Community but whom we cease to associate with or be concerned about; a culture of conformity, defensiveness and stagnation; and, a prolonged and deepened sense of loss in all quarters.

The isolationist road is a dangerous one for governments to take. Increased insularity amongst the population of a hurting nation, an apathy when it comes to affairs that are not in the immediate geographical locus and occuring only in the present moment (or in the anticipated tragedies of the near-term), and a dissociation from the greater world and potential future is tantamount to a return to feudalism. It is anti-evoluationry from the standpoint of beneficial individual and societal advancement.

Philosophically, the seeds of great change lie within us, to be found introspectively...but there exists an undeniable universe of greater possibilities in external exploration. We must employ both processes, and ignore neither.

As an Internationalist, as a Global Futurist, and as an ardent advocate of unlimited human potential, I am very fearful of the retreat and regression that invariably follows disappointment, or a loss of faith.

The channels of communication must be kept open. Curiosity and conversation must be encouraged. Sharing of greater amounts of information amongst a greater number of receptive minds (as in the collaborative aspect of the GICBC - The Global Interworked Cooperative Business Community) brings us closer to the "cerebral critical mass" needed to achieve breakthroughs for the improvement of the quality of life throughout all peoples of this world.

Let's not isolate. We must collaborate.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle [ http://aboutDouglasCastle.blogspot.com ]

Poll: Isolationism soars among Americans

By BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer

WASHINGTON – Americans are turning away from the world, showing a tendency toward isolationism in foreign affairs that has risen to the highest level in four decades, a poll out Thursday found.
Almost half, 49 percent, told the polling organization that the United States should "mind its own business" internationally and let other countries get along the best they can on their own, the Pew Research Center survey found. That's up from 30 percent who said that in December 2002.
Results of the survey appear to conflict with President Barack Obama's activist foreign policy, including a newly announced buildup of 30,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan to fight Taliban and al-Qaida extremists.
"Isolationist Sentiment Surges to Four-Decade High," the nonpartisan research center headlined its report on the poll about America's role in the world.
Only 32 percent of the poll respondents favored increasing U.S. troops in Afghanistan, while 40 percent favored decreasing them. And fewer than half, or 46 percent, of those polled said it was somewhat or very likely that Afghanistan would be able to withstand the radicals' threat.
Forty-one percent of those surveyed said the United States plays a less important and powerful role as a world leader than it did a decade ago, up from 25 percent who said that just before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the report said.
Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut said in an interview that the "very bad economy" appeared most responsible for the growth of isolationist sentiment. He said the public was also "displeased with the two wars we are waging, in Iraq and Afghanistan."
While isolationism and unilateralism reached four-decade highs among the public, the stature of China increased.
Among Americans polled, 44 percent said China was the world's leading economic power compared with 27 percent who named the United States. In February 2008, 41 percent said the U.S. was the leading economic power, while 30 percent said China.
A majority of Americans surveyed, or 53 percent, see China's emerging power as a threat to the United States.
The United States is seen by a comfortable majority, 63 percent, as the world's leading military power.
Concerning the Middle East, about half, or 51 percent, of respondents said they were more sympathetic toward Israel than to the Palestinians, who drew 12 percent. Fourteen percent supported neither side, while 19 percent offered no opinion.
The findings come from two surveys. The first poll, of 2,000 adults, was conducted by telephone Oct. 28 to Nov. 8 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. A subsequent poll of 1,003 people conducted from Nov. 12-15 had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

"I WAS ONLY FOLLOWING MY ORDERS"

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Napoleon once said that, "God is on the side of the heaviest artillery." In his brief, somewhat atheistic (or at least cynical) bit of philosophy, he made it quite clear that "might is right." Conventional wisdom abounds: "History is written by the winners," "No person is above the law unless he can invoke executive privilege," "You've won a judgment, but it cannot be enforced," "To make an omelet, you've got to break some eggs," "A few must suffer for the many," "Someone's got to take the fall for this,"... I will spare you the litany.

One of my favorites has to do with the Nuremberg Defense. The Nuremburg Trials of various Nazi war criminals were conducted as a concilliatory gesture to show the citizens of the world that the oft-denied Holocaust was a criminal act -- a terrible chapter in Human affairs where people were reduced to their lowest common denominator -- that of our inherent animal nature, of our capacity to de-humanize other people, of our herd mentality, or our sadistic propensities, and mostly, of our "expedient ethics" when we are under pressure.

The Holocaust was not an exception -- it was merely a demonstration. Its clones, its offspring, its legacy still thrives every single day in other parts of the world.

What invariably follows these "minicausts" are inquests, investigations, some trials and some punishments. The same questions are asked; the same excuses and explanations are proffered; and the same cycle continues. You cannot break the cycle without changing basic Human Behavior.

The Nuremberg Defense for torture and genocide was simple: "I was only following my orders."

An abdication of personal responsibility, combined with the contextual suspension of ethics, make war (and genocide) possible. The greatest human tragedies occur when they are merely viewed as "bad policies". It takes strength to be an individual, and to adhere to your ethics when those around you are weak, and in the thrall of the biggest bully on the block.

Following is an article from the ASSOCIATED PRESS:

UN expert criticizes US torture decision
By VERONIKA OLEKSYN,
Associated Press Writer Veronika Oleksyn,35 mins ago.

VIENNA – President Barack Obama's decision not to prosecute CIA operatives who used questionable interrogation practices violates international law, the U.N.'s top torture investigator said Saturday. But he said Washington is unlikely to face any legal sanctions.
On Thursday, Obama absolved CIA officers from prosecution for harsh, painful interrogation of terror suspects under the former Bush administration. The announcement was met with disappointment from human rights groups and former detainees who condemned such methods as torture.
In a brief telephone interview with The Associated Press, Manfred Nowak, an Austrian law professor who serves as a special rapporteur for the Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council, said the United States had committed itself under the U.N. Convention against Torture to make torture a crime and to prosecute those suspected of engaging in it.
"They are party to the convention and the convention is very, very clear," Nowak said when asked to confirm comments contained in an interview he gave Austria's Der Standard newspaper. "The fact that you carried out an order doesn't relieve you of your responsibility," he said, adding it could be a mitigating factor.
Nowak, who said he would soon travel to Washington for meetings with officials, also called for a comprehensive independent investigation into the matter and added it was important to compensate the victims.
"Now we need to know all the facts — not just bits and pieces," Nowak said. "First you need the truth and then you need justice."
The Obama administration on Thursday also released secret CIA memos detailing interrogation tactics sanctioned under Bush.
The memos authorized keeping detainees naked, in painful standing positions and in cold cells for long periods of time. Other techniques included depriving them of solid food and slapping them. Sleep deprivation, prolonged shackling and threats to a detainee's family also were used.
Washington is unlikely to face any legal sanctions, but "naming and shaming has its impact, and usually governments try not to be criticized," Nowak said.
####

The question I have is this: When the government gives you a license to torture, to kill or to do something which violates your proclaimed code of ethics, does it also give you license to become a beast?

We are, each of us, responsible for our own choices and our own actions. We choose the masters we serve, and we choose whether or not to follow rules or orders given by any third party. People without personal principles, principles worth living or dying for, principles which are inviolate -- are just puppets.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

GOOD NEWS FOR U.S. EXPORTERS

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Due to the global economic crisis in general, and to the extreme recession in the United States economy specifically, EXIM Bank is advising domestic (U.S-based) business that there are increasingly potent inducements to export, and to become more aggressive in export operations.

The information which follows was furnished by EXIM in a bulletin earlier this morning:

MARCH 26, 2009Contact: Marianna Ohe (202-565-3200)
EX-IM BANK 2009 ANNUAL CONFERENCE APRIL 16-17 IN WASHINGTON, D.C. HIGHLIGHTSBANK ROLE ADDRESSING INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC CRISIS, BACKING U.S. EXPORTS
Former Saudi Aramco President and CEO Abdallah Jum'ah,GE Vice Chairman John Krenicki, Jr., Are Keynote Speakers
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Participants in the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) Annual Conference April 16-17 in Washington, D.C. will have the chance to engage in open dialogue on how the Bank can further refine its financing tools to help U.S. exporters and their lenders during the current international economic crisis. The Bank is chartered by Congress to help finance U.S. exports in order to help create and sustain U.S. jobs.
More than 1,000 U.S. exporters, domestic and international lenders, brokers, government representatives and foreign buyers are expected to attend the Bank's 75th Anniversary Annual Conference at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, with the theme "Export Finance: A Key To Economic Recovery."
"As the world begins to look beyond the troubles of today, the consensus is that trade, and thus trade finance, will be the cornerstone of rebuilding the world economy," said John A. McAdams, Ex-Im Bank chief operating officer and senior vice president, Export Finance. "Ex-Im Bank is fulfilling its Congressional mandate to supplement private sector trade finance, and has been modifying its financial products and introducing new initiatives to help U.S. exporters and lenders cope with today's market conditions."
Ex-Im Bank's total authorizations for the period Oct. 1, 2008-Feb. 28, 2009 have increased dramatically over the same period a year earlier. Working capital loan guarantees alone showed a more than 40 percent increase, and short-term insurance a 240 percent increase, during the period. Working capital guarantees are most often used to benefit small and medium-sized exporters.
"The Annual Conference will give us the chance to update our customers on the changes we've made and hear from them what more we can do, as well as give them outstanding networking opportunities," McAdams said.
In a "Dialogue with Stakeholders" on the opening day of the conference, McAdams and other Ex-Im Bank officials will invite exporters, lenders and other participants to address new ideas to enhance the Bank's products. In a separate seminar on Friday, Ex-Im Bank staff will explain in detail recent Bank initiatives and program enhancements designed to improve liquidity for U.S. exporters and lenders.
Speakers and panelists addressing the conference theme include: Abdallah S. Jum'ah, first Saudi Arabian President and CEO (Retired) Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco); John Krenicki, Jr., vice chairman, GE, and president and CEO, GE Energy Infrastructure; Josh Bivens, economist, Economic Policy Institute; Bob Davis, international economics correspondent, The Wall Street Journal; and Michael Moore, professor of economics and international affairs, George Washington University and former member of the Council of Economic Advisors.
In a plenary session on the second day of the conference, four former Ex-Im Bank chairmen will share their perspectives on Ex-Im Bank's role in the current financial crisis and the challenges that lie ahead: John A. Bohn, Jr. (1986-1989); John D. Macomber (1989-1992); Kenneth D. Brody (1993-1995), and James A. Harmon (1997-2001).
Conference workshops and panels will discuss a wide range of topics. Small businesses will explain "in their own words" how they are using Ex-Im Bank working capital loan guarantees, export credit insurance, and medium-term loan guarantees to compete in global markets. Ex-Im Bank officials and staff will explain ways that U.S. clean technology companies can use Ex-Im Bank financing to grow their exports in today's uncertain capital markets.
Major panels on export markets will include "India: Still Growing;" "Financing Services in the Middle East" covering Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries; "Colombia: A Market of Opportunity and Growth;" and "Africa: Opportunities in the Big 5 -- Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa."
Ex-Im Bank also will present small business awards to exporters, lenders and brokers for outstanding performances as Ex-Im Bank customers and partners.
For more information on Ex-Im Bank and the Annual Conference, including the current agenda, and to register online to attend, visit http://www.exim.gov/.
Ex-Im Bank is the official export-credit agency of the United States. The independent, self-sustaining federal agency, now celebrating its 75th anniversary, helps create and maintain U.S. jobs by financing the sale of U.S. exports, primarily to emerging markets throughout the world, by providing loan guarantees, export-credit insurance and direct loans. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

BIRTH OF A NATION/ BIRTH OF A NOTION

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

It has now been estimated that membership on Facebook, the popular internet social medium, is large enough that if it were to declare itself a country, Facebook would be the SIXTH largest nation on the Planet. Cyberspace has neither geological nor temporal barriers -- it might just be that place where the "Collective Consciousness" potentiates reaching its critical mass, and perceivable changes in reality actually occur.

The individuals comprising the world's vast population are beginning to more closely resemble the cells in a giant organism. This is either for better (I hope), or for worse. In either case, the movement in this sociological and psychological direction is indisputable.

THE POWER OF THE TEAM ENTITY

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

It bears repeating -- As the worldwide economic situation becomes increasingly intimidating, with its day-to-day volatility and its evident downward macroeconomic trend, several skills are absolutely crucial to survival:

  • Entrepreneurship (with its compatriots: initiative, innovation and persistence).

  • Networking (with an emphasis on its second crucial phase: relationship-building).

  • Teamwork (with a focus on cooperation and equitable sharing of efforts and rewards).

I recently posed a question to some of my colleagues at Linked In about the notion of the Team Unit, and received some wonderful responses. One of them follows for your information.

I've also witnessed the humanitarian success of organizations like Rotary, Heifer International and Kiva, who combine resources and people to build teams and processes that successfully changes the lives of others. No man is an island - - and today we can join hands electronically to make an impact (personally and professionally).

On 11/13/08 8:47 PM, Douglas Castle asked: THE TEAM ENTITY (An Issue For Your Evaluation and Comments) -- (This was my post):
Dear Colleagues:

We spend a great deal of time networking and acquiring new contacts. Then, some of us agressively and positively go to work converting those contects from mere names into good, two-way relationships. Why must it end there?

I believe that the most powerful business operating subunit is the Team. Further, I believe that team-building is going to become a skill of increasing importance as the traditional corporate and institutional paradigms are put to the test.
Kindly review: http://thenationalnetworkerweblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/using-teams-to-fuel-exponential.html and let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle, THE INTERNATIONALIST PAGE

The greatest challenge which lies before us regarding this issue is to educate and motive the tremendous majority of displaced people in the world economy who are inveterate "corporate" creatures with either 1) very specialized, or at the other extreme, very nebulously-defined roles within the political heirarchy of the big company interpersonal infrastructure and typical status quo paradigms, and 2) those individuals who are accustomed to working alone. How do we bring the appeal of "teamwork" to these persons who constitute the greatest percentage of the populations of most westernized countries?

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

THE MYTH OF COMPETITION

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Competition requires a tremendous effort at defending your business against others potentially serving your chosen marketplace. The competitive spirit, combined with entrepreneurship, have created every great business, and every giant industry. The will to succeed and the will to be noticed above others are powerful motivations for achievement -- especially during times of general economic prosperity, and during the initial phase of a company's trajectory.

The practical truth, however, is that it considerably more efficient to consolidate and build alliances (often through either the absorption of competitors or the sharing of turf with them contractually) than to spend time in a defensive/offensive alternating strategy. Befriending and negotiating are more effective than alienating and issuing challenges. The great planners and designers of conglomerates and cartels understand this and use it is as a primary strategy. They absorb and grow. They promote sharing.

In a tempestuous economic time, blind competition becomes increasingly suicidal, even when the thought of sharing a "smaller pie" becomes contrary to certain hard-wired survival instincts.

Ask yourself these simple questions, on the subject of partnering and cooperating:

  1. Why should I invest new money in something that someone has already developed?

  2. Why should I fight for market share when I can consolidate marketshare?

  3. Why shouldn't I consolidate and add more products (diversification), as well as expand and cross-pollinate my customer list?

  4. Isn't a larger company (through consolidation) going to get better vendor terms, greater credit facilities, and a more diversified talent pool of employees and staff?

  5. Can't I grow my entire business (markets, products, talents) more quickly through consolidation?

  6. Can't I create efficiencies (through elimation of redundant positions and functions) through consolidation?

  7. Can I integrate businesses with a supplier, my consumers (if they are resellers), or with a competitor?

  8. Can I combine forces with a company outside of my industry if we sell different, non-competitive products to the same market?

  9. Can I combine forces with with a company who uses the same vendors that I use?

Substantial tasks and skills are required to form the alliances and partnerships which annex business "territory" and create the means to defend it by sheer virtue of size or dominance. Some of these tasks and skills are enumerated quickly below:

  1. Networking. You must create as many contacts as you can in order to either create or be presented with potential opportunities;

  2. Research. You must learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your prospective target partner. What are the existing and prospective benefits and costs?

  3. Negotiate. Weaker partners are usually extremely easy or extremely difficult to acquire (a curious, ideosyncratic bi-polarity,), while stronger partners are almost invariably more challenging to deal with -- this is largely due to the perception that they have much more at stake to lose. They can take their time to evaluate the pros and cons. You must appear strong, yet reserved in your acquisitiveness, in order to court these desirable allies. Also, if you present your quarry with a parade of all of the benefits you offer, and don't discuss a bit of what you expect (or demand) in return, you will seem less than credible;

  4. Communicate. Be in touch with your chosen allies as frequently as possible. This increases their comfort with you, their reliance upon your presence as a voice in their affairs, and the free flow of valuable intelligence back to you for your use. Be participatory. Be real. Be present.

  5. Share. It would seem to be elementary, but this aspect of partnership and alliance-building seems to be forgotten. If you hear of any news which could have an effect upon your ally or partner, get that information to him/ her immediately. Also, if you discuss a resource which you have discovered which has increased or enhanced your business in any way, share that information as an added benefit to your partners and allies. By making it obvious that you care about them, you make it easier for them to let their instinctive guard down, and begin to trust and care about you.

These are tempestuous economic times. Fortify yourself, and your business interests with powerful circles of well-chosen partners and allies.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

FINDING COMMON GROUND

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Sadly, people seldom open their doors, whether in real space or cyberspace, to strangers. As Human Beings, we have been reared in a culture of defensiveness and fear. Yet, despite this, we must find the appropriate instrument (not necessarily a battering ram or a tear gas grenade) to pry the door open in able to commence a productive dialogue; productive dialogues lead to friendships; and friendships lead to enhanced Relationship Capital, prosperity (through trade), and peace.

Some door-opening techniques are simply outlined below for your consideration. Each of them positively and effectively exploits some aspect of behavioral psychology:

  • Before you communicate, review the prospective recipient's bio, blog or website, so that you can open with a genuine compliment or a relevant question;

  • Initiate your dialogue informationally...do not speak of specific business;

  • Touch upon topics which are universal to all civilized persons, such as: difficult economic times, bringing up healthy children, climatic change, alternative energy, international cooperation and relationships, and the like;

  • Ask for the recipient's opinion or views on these topics;

  • Ask that the recipient review your blog, website or other materials and give his or her opinion on them -- this shows your respect for the other person's intelligence and point of view;

  • In correspondence, try to incorporate pictures of yourself (with family, if possible), and ask if the recipient would do the same -- this personalizes and humanizes the dialogue, and permits the recipient to exercise a bit of ego;

  • Have a productive informational interchange (as described in the preceding points) before you tactfully broach your business or other cause-based proposition.

A ritualistic celebration of "common ground" is so deeply ingrained in the socialization process, that to gracelessly rush into a business proposition would be foolhardy. Additionally, if you honor this ritual, you will be talking about business with a new friend, instead of a stranger.

Again...build bridges instead of fences.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle, INTERNATIONALIST

p.s. I could not resist posting the picture in the above right. As silly as its portrayal of the situation is, there is, lamentably, too much truth to the astounding deficiency of reason that instantly overwhelms otherwise rational persons when there is a perceived threat and they are in need of some release of pent-up energy, or in need of a person or group of persons to blame for the problem.

A RADICAL SHIFT IN THE GLOBAL BALANCE

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

A great deal is happening in the world today. My instincts tell me that the economics and wealth of the many nations in this world are in the process of major change. Further, I believe this change is proceeding at an accelerating rate, with ever-more precipitous results.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
While certain countries will experience declines and abdicate their thrones of power, influence and control, others will flourish, and expand their territory, in every sense of this expression.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

The greatest refuge against this tempest is in being in an Internationalist business, preferably web-powered, and to work diligently as a citizen ambassador at making friends in all countries. Friends (need I remind you?) can also be customers, vendors, co-venturers, and mentors.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Please read the latest post at THE GLOBAL FUTURIST and give some very serious thought to what I am saying.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Be vigilant. Be flexible. Accept the idea of a dynamic environment. Stop being xenophobic and begin educating yourself in as many different cultures as you possibly can. This will make you, The Internationalists, thrive while others walk off in stealth and shame.

LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
Dear Readers:

Welcome to "ME, INCORPORATED."
I must give my friend and colleague, Adam J. Kovitz, attribution for that latter term. It has sparked a serious interest in me. Adam speaks and writes eloquently about Relationship Capital -- a certain measure of value each of us has by virtue of his access to and influence upon others. From a cold perspective, the more Relationship Capital one has, the greater one's value in the world of commerce.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
While we stand by as observers and ultimately, as beneficiaries, Adam is refining the definition and measurement of this valuable essence, and is seeking the Philosopher's Stone to transmute ordinary individuals and organizations into individuals and organizations (which are ultimately just groups of individuals) into value-added enterprises, fueled with growing reserves of Relationship Capital.

There are numerous ways in which each of us can participate (and even collaborate!) with Adam, who is also the publisher of THE NATIONAL NETWORKER. Your education begins with a visit to http://thenationalnetworker.com/ . Adam references the notion of Relationship Capital quite frequently in his writings and speaking engagements. An organization which Adam had played an initial role in (which, sadly has gone off on a tangent since Adam left in order to pursue the development of the concept on his own), the RNIA, is attempting to popularize the same notion, but without adequate focus or success. Adam continues to further the development and understanding of the concept through THE NATIONAL NETWORKER, Adam's growing publication about many aspects of networking and relationship-building. I would suggest you go to the site and subscribe to this Newsletter. Adam has several exceptionally passionate and knowledgeable writers who contribute some fabulous content.

Traditional macroeconomic models, particularly those involving fiscal policy, are going to be replaced with a radical new paradigm. You will not be able to understand economics, marketing, management or politics without incorporating a study of RELATIONSHIP CAPITAL.

We are, each of us, a self-contained, fully-functioning enterprise. As I have said before, each of us is our own representative to the rest of the world. Each of us bears the torch and each of us is a citizen ambassador. Enabled with constantly-improving communications technologies, each of us is a corporation...each of us is a nation...each of us has the world within his grasp. What will determine the individual success which each of us enjoys, however, will be his ability to differentiate himself, as an entity, from a host of competitors for the world's attention. We must each have something unique to offer.

From an Internationist Perspective, I would propose that you start taking an inventory of the following attributes, each of which is going to be a variable in the equation that measures your store of Relationship Capital:

  • The number of personal and professional contacts you have directly;

  • The sphere of influence that each of these contacts possesses;

  • The speed of your access to these contacts (a function of trust, credibility, prior experience, how likeable you are, how helpful you are, and the like);

  • Your ability to mobilize these contacts to take action;

  • Your ability to orchestrate an operation involving several contacts simultaneously...

The list continues...

By analogy, each of us is like an individual cell, infused with unique DNA. But with the application of communications technology and Relationship Capital, we can each function as an entire body by sparking other cells into cooperative wakefulness. One single cell can spark world change...One single cell can transform the entire body...One single cell can unite all of Humanity.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Welcome again to ME, INCORPORATED, and to its ultimate stock in trade -- Relationship Capital.

Internationalist

U.S. EXPORTERS' RESOURCE CENTER - UPDATE!

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

This is not really a post at all. Yes, yes, I know that it looks a great deal like a post, but it really isn't. I won't belittle you. THE WHOLE REASON THAT THIS IS HERE IS TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THE LAST POST (THE U.S. EXPORTERS' RESOURCE CENTER) HAS BEEN UPDATED AS OF 25 JANUARY, 2007. Simply scroll down to the last post (or simply hit "older posts" below, right) if it is not already on your Favorites menu.

Seems foolish to have to do this, but those technophiles at Google simply won't let me change the date on an "old post" when it is updated. You can update your blog, but you can't update a post. Ridiculous. I'm trying hard not to be discouraged.

Anyway, take a look at the post, and make it one of your FAVORITES.

And, as always, should you have any questions or ideas regarding the post, export or international trade, please email me directly at FreeDECastle001@yahoo.com. And Scott, if you should find any more typographical or grammatical errors, I hope that you will tell me immediately, as you have so judiciously done in the past. And Nancy, thank you for the information on Coface -- good call. As usual, I am in your debt. Joanne...thank you for suggesting the TREND LETTER as a resource.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

U.S. EXPORTERS' RESOURCE CENTER

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

U.S. EXPORTERS' RESOURCE CENTER (updated 3/3/07):

This post will be updated on a regular basis. Certain entries will be eliminated. New links will be added. I will insert very subtle humor, and shameless self-promotion wherever I can sneak it in. Despite this, I hope that you will add this POST to your FAVORITES for ready reference. If you do not, terrible things may begin to happen to you (this is an idle threat that only a superstitious fool would believe).

If you find any particular website listed here especially helpful, kindly let me know about it...similarly, should you find any website inaccessible or less than helpful, I would greatly appreciate being advised of that, as well. Simply reference U. S. EXPORTERS' RESOURCE CENTER (and the date of the post), and email me directly at FreeDECastle001@yahoo.com. I might even become sufficiently inspired to change the pictures on this post from time to time. On a serious note, this information is provided to assist you to expand your operations to include EXPORT -- I am also always personally available, should you have any specific ideas, issues, co-ventures, business plans or specific transactions to discuss. I would be honored to engage in productive correspondence or commerce with any aspiring Internationalist regarding export or any other issues concerning Internationalism.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

IF YOU ARE TRULY AN IMPATIENT SOUL, YOU CAN SKIP MY CUSTOMARY, LONG-WINDED SPEECH AND GET RIGHT TO THE THE "MEAT" (THE LINKS!), BY SIMPLY SCROLLING DOWN TO WHERE YOU SEE THE AWE-INSPIRING PICTURE OF THE EARTH, AS VIEWED FROM SPACE. THAT'S WHERE THE SERIOUS BUSINESS WILL COMMENCE. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED...SOME SERIOUS HUMANITARIAN MORALIZING BEGINS NOW...

The best way to achieve a peaceful, unified world, is through enlightened international commerce. Let us all work together to make this a peaceful and profitable 2007. With globalization, outsourcing, offshoring and the potential of the Internet, Internationalism is a natural step in the evolution of business. Xenophobia (which is very difficult to spell anyway) is losing both its economic and political appeal. If you choose to fear and avoid change to a multicultural commercial environment, your market share will be taken right out from under you by your more courageous and open-minded competitors. Be flexible, like the willow tree, and survive the winds of change.

ARE YOU READY TO SCROLL DOWN TO THE LINKS SECTION YET? JUST LOOK FOR THE PICTURE OF THE EARTH. REALLY. I WON'T BE OFFENDED. I PERSONALLY WOULD HAVE SCROLLED DOWN RIGHT AFTER THE VAPID (YET ACCURATE) "WILLOW TREE" METAPHOR.

CAPITALISM, HUMANELY APPLIED, CAN ACCOMPLISH POSITIVE AND LASTING CHANGES FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL OF SOCIETY AND HUMANKIND. WAR WOULD BECOME FAR LESS DESIRABLE AND PREVALENT IF PEACE WERE SHOWN TO BE THE MORE ECONOMICALLY VIABLE ALTERNATIVE. PROFIT CAN BE USED AS A MOTIVE AND A TOOL FOR THE ACHIEVEMENT OF MANY WONDERFUL THINGS. LIKE FIRE, IT IS A NEUTRAL FORCE THAT MUST BE USED CAREFULLY. VERY, VERY CAREFULLY.

SCROLLING DOWN RIGHT NOW MIGHT NOT BE A BAD IDEA. I AM GETTING VERY PEDANTIC. CONSIDER YOURSELF DULY WARNED.

EXPORT - A TOOL FOR WORLD CHANGE.

Export involves tearing down walls and building new bridges. The process not only produces profits, increases employment and promulgates multi-cultural education, but it causes a "humanization" of people who were once strangers...citizens of different countries, subjected to different influences. Commerce necessitates humanization through constant dialogue and interaction. We are humans, with needs, with vulnerabilities, with families -- globalized commerce is the catalyst necessary to facilitate this increasingly personalized dialogue, this creation of interpersonal bonds between new friends who can rise above propaganda and politics because they begin to see something of themselves in the people they transact their business with. The implications are profound, and to disregard the vast potentiality for this goodness is to deny the spark of divinity in each of us, and to surrender to our lesser, warlike nature. The actual benefits of synergy brought about through Internationalism far outweigh the perceived benefits of isolationism and unwieldy trade restricvtions.

IT IS STILL NOT TOO LATE TO SCROLL RIGHT DOWN TO THE LINKS SECTION. I COULD GO ON LIKE THIS FOR A LONG TIME. YOU COULD READ THROUGH ALL OF THE LINKS FIRST, AND THEN COME BACK TO THIS PART...I WOULD NEVER KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. REALLY...IT'S NOT A BIG ISSUE TO ME. BESIDES, YOUR TIME IS PRECIOUS. IN FACT, YOU NEVER KNOW JUST HOW LITTLE OR HOW MUCH OF IT YOU HAVE.

Humanity does not have to be a zero-sum game. We are born with the ability (as well as the fundamental need) to seek the companionship and comfort of others. We are not a race - we are a single, great community with the ability to change our destiny at will. Every transaction is an emotional and spiritual change, a transfer between two parties. Every one of these crucial, pivotal exchanges is a chance at achieving inter-human communion. We need, as Internationalists, to create more of these opportunites for meaningful dialogue, and to use them as a basis upon which to enrich our understanding of one another. And we must be bold in extending our hands in friendship, if we are ever to touch one another's hearts and create a productive society of abundance. Talk about the virtues and promise of Internationalism, and practice its tenets to the best of your ability. We can make a difference. We MUST make a difference.

By the way:

The above photograph was made available through a very courageous fellow Internationalist, who has suggested (rather aggressively) that I should consider starting either a Yahoo or Google Opt-In Email Group or Community so that we could more readily access eachother with our questions, ideas, and discoveries. Just as importantly, this type of Group might become a tremendous networking medium for the development of profitable business relationships. I would be honored if you would consider this idea, and let me know your thoughts. I can be accessed directly at FreeDECastle001@yahoo.com. ~~~

My instincts and experience both advise me that in the world of business, one can never have too many allies, and that one can never have enough resources at one's disposal. International commerce is more principally about people and their inter-relationships than it is about mere products. Friendship, as well as demand, is what makes commerce happen. ~~~

As is my custom, I have already overstated my case. Make the best use of the information which follows. Check for changes, additions, deletions and formatting changes frequently. Needless to say (why do people insist upon saying this if there is, in fact, actually a need to say something, anyway?), I am certain about one thing: if there are any typographical, grammatical or syntax errors in this post, I will hear about them. ~~~ Welcome, whether you are a seeker or a cynic.~~~

SOURCES OF TRADE FINANCING AND FOREIGN PAYMENTS PROCESSING --

Trade Financing and Foreign Payments Processing are not easy to come by, especially if your bank is either 1) not familiar with the mechanics involved in the process, or 2) is simply unwilling to go throught the bother because your account relationship is not very valuable to them. Trade Financing and Foreign Payments Processing are very documentation-intensive, and are generally costly. If you do not have a significant profit margin in your particular product (i.e., 20% of every sale is gross profit to your company), you may lack a sufficient spread to accommodate the costs of these services. Sometimes the costs of these services can be added on to your cutomer's bill as part and parcel of getting your product delivered. Several of these services are listed below. Surprisingly, some of the very basic "small ticket" mechanisms, such as Visa, Mastercard, and even PayPal may be applicable, depending upon the price of your product, and the volume of transactions which you will need to be processed.

It might be a good idea to simply to do a Google Search for trade finance, and do a bit of exploring and inquiring. Just visit www.google.com, to initiate your search. Another search that might prove helpful would be for purchase order finance.

~VENTURE CAPITAL~VENTURE CAPITAL~VENTURE CAPITAL

*** In addition to the foregoing resources, should your firm require VENTURE CAPITAL to facilitate product development, project financing (as differentiated from typical trade financing for specific transactions), or to fuel growth, I would suggest you explore the possibilities with MR. MIKE FESLER, who is a well-networked venture capitalist, and who is affiliated with KMA CAPITAL PARTNERS, INC., and a number of other capital formation and management firms. Several of his websites include www.kmacapital.com, www.blackhawkpartners.com, and www.projectanna.org. After visiting his websites, you may wish to contact Mike via email directly at mfesler@kmacapital.com. If you do so, please be kind enough to indicate that you were referred to him through this blog. I could ultimately be rewarded for my efforts by getting a free lunch (in Economics School it was considered axiomatic that "there is no such thing as a free lunch."-- I'll take my chances). Mike is an excellent source of referrals and can offer you some direction, as well. When I last spoke with him, he didn't hesitate to tell me where to go. Then again, many people do. Seriously...he is extremely resourceful, and easy to talk with, at least for short periods of time. Mike deals in start-ups (requiring "angel" investors) all the way through third-round financings of companies ready to be acquired or to become publicly-traded.

*** In the interest of fairness, you may also choose to contact the NATIONAL VENTURE CAPITAL ASSOCIATION at www.nvca.org, or the AMERICAN VENTURE CAPITAL EXCHANGE at www.avce.com, for listings of member venture capital providers and private investors. A brief note: Know what you are asking for -- there is a vast difference between venture capital and trade financing, and the sources of each have very different judgment criteria in assessing your company's viability as a borrower or investee.

SOURCES OF MAJOR INTERNATIONAL PROJECT FINANCING --

*Sadly, the best sources of project financing are some of the international banks and asset-based commercial finance companies, oftimes operating in conjuction with governmental grants, sponsorship, or subsidies in terms of interest rates or payment guarantees. Most of the best and least expensive sources are not readily accessible to thinly-capitalized or relatively young entrepreneurial enterprises. Project financing is best done, especially for the neophyte exporter, through a joint venture comprised of of one or several well-established, experienced firms. The ideally constructed co-ventures usually incorporate some local business concern (e.g., a local business partner) to gain acceptance and show good faith. Co-Venture opportunities are often described in FINANCIAL TIMES MAGAZINE (www.ft.com), THE INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE (www.iht.com), THE WALL STREET JOURNAL (www.wsj.com) and a host of other international business magazines. Most major project funding is provided by major banks or first-tier industrial finance companies, in conjunction with certain government-sponsored payment guarantees or similar credit enhancements.

* If you have a well-crafted joint venture proposal which is ready to be presented, contact me directly, if you wish, at FreeDECastle001@yahoo.com, and I might be able assist you in locating, qualifying and negotiating terms with a viable, interested partner. I enjoy bringing good people together, and my network is fairly diverse and extensive. If I cannot help you, I may know someone who can.

SOURCES OF INTERNATIONAL CREDIT (ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE)INSURANCE --

*Generally speaking, transactions which are handled through the use of documentary letters of credit, are the easiest to deal with. Sometimes a customer will agree to a third-party escrow of payment with an attorney or escrow company. Regarding this, you may wish to visit www.Escrow.com. A more difficult situation emerges when your customer can only get a letter of credit from a small local bank (in which case you may need to get the letter of credit confirmed,e.g., guaranteed, by a major, well-established bank in the U.S. or some other G-8 nation. If you wish to sell to your customers on open account (30-, 60-, or 90-day terms), it becomes imperative, if you wish to factor their receivables to you for creating cash flow, that you obtain credit insurance to affirm the viability of your customer's willingness and ability to make complete and timely payment. The best source of companies which are providers of this type of specialized insurance are listed with either the FCIA MANAGEMENT COMPANY, with its site at www.fcia.com, or at the INTERNATIONAL CREDIT AND SURETY ASSOCIATION, with its site at www.icisa.org. Other direct providers include www.securitasglobal.com and www.atradius.us.

COFACE, a French-based international credit insurance firm, offers a great variety of insurances against trade risks, including accounts receivable insurance, political risk insurance and other types of specialized insurance written to cover virtually any type of transnational business exposure which could prove potentially problematic to an exporter. They also feature a frequently-updated list of rankings of countries in terms of relative political risk. view their website either at www.coface.com, or at www.coface-usa.com.

SOURCES OF OTHER TYPES OF INSURANCE --

Some of the other types of insurance which your business may require include Directors & Officers Liability Insurance, Errors and Omissions Insurance, Shipping Insurance, and various insurances in the event that a shipment is held up, postponing your delivery of a product in accordance with your agreement with your customer (e.g, forcing you into a position of default). There is political risk insurance (usually for longer-term major capital projects in unstable countries), and business interruption insurance. While the insurance and credit agencies and providers specified above (as well as EXIM and the SBA) can sometimes point you in the right direction to find a market to underwrite these specialized types of insurance, you may also simply contact Mr. ALEXANDER CONTI, a Financial Representative and a vigorous industry networker for the NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL FINANCIAL NETWORK. Mr. Conti, who is a personal acquaintance, can be reached directly with your inquiries (please do be certain to mention that you were referred through this blog) at alex.conti@nmfn.com. The associated corporate website for more product-related information is at www.nmfn.com/alexconti. If he cannot help you directly, he may well be able to set you off in the best direction.

SOURCES OF SHIPPING, FREIGHT FORWARDING AND LOGISTICS --

*As an exporter, you will be heavily reliant upon freight forwarders for delivery and storage of your products, both domestically and internationally, via land, sea or air. You will find them to be a very good source of informatiuon regarding the rules, regulations and documentation associated with export transactions. They can be very powerful allies, as well as a terrific source of information. They can do a tremendous amount of work for you, to allow you to focus more on production and sales than on packaging, shipping and logistics. For your information, THE U.S. FEDERAL MARITIME COMMISSION (www.fmc.gov) licenses freight carriers and forwarders. Some viable sources which you may use to identify freight forwarders (usually through different trade organizations and industry organizations) are listed below for your use:

*** www.freightnet.com.
>

*** www.forwarders.com.
>

*** www.tbc-world.com.
>

*** www.fiata.com.
>

*** www.logisticssolutionsgroup.com.
>

*** www.unisys.com.

SOURCES OF EXPORT DOCUMENTS, INCOTERMS AND STANDARDIZED FORMS --

The best sources of export documents, incoterm descriptions and standardized forms for all of your export-related business needs can be found at the following sites:

*** www.unzco.com.
>

*** www.iccbooksusa.com.
>

*** www.cch.com.
>

You might find it additionally useful to simply conduct a Google search for "export documents" or "international legal documents", and find some other interesting sources. Simply visit www.google.com, and conduct your search. If you find some truly splendid sites, please let me know, so that I can post them up here, and get credit for work which I did not actually do.

SOURCES OF TRADE, TARIFF AND EXPORT REGULATORY INFORMATION --

*The best sources of trade, tariff and export regulatory information are, logically enough, provided by the various agencies of the United States Government. Several of the most significant ones are listed below for your convenient reference. Bear in mind that the regulatory environment, both domestically and internationally, is ever-changing, and that its complexities are best navigated with the help of your chosen freight forwarder, certified public accountant and your attorney. Regarding this last, if you are , as I am, a shameless, penny-pinching tightwad, it is a comfort to know that the ELAN PROGRAM (which is sponsored by the SBA) will enable you to have a free conversation (or two) with an "expert" (in accordance with the Government's standards, of course) trade attorney. You can access the ELAN program at www.fita.org/elan. The other sources:

*** THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE, at www.state.gov.
>

*** THE U.S. CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT, at www.customs.ustreas.gov.
>

*** THE U.S. TREASURY DEPARTMENT, at www.ustreas.gov.
>

*** THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE (through its EXPORT ADMINISTRATION REGULATIONS Division and its BUREAU OF INDUSTRY AND SECURITY), at www.doc.gov is a treasure trove of regulatory information, but it is best navigated with the assistance of a knowledgeable trade attorney.

SOURCES OF INFORMATION ABOUT INTERNATIONAL MARKETS AND DEMAND --

>>>It would be prudent to review the website sources cited in the previous Sections, as many of them will also provide you with a wealth of information about the net import and net export positions(as well as other useful data) of numerous countries with respect to specific products and goods. You might also wish to purchase a good, current international almanac to get the communication coordinates for foreign embassies and consulates. The following are also good sources of information on the status of trade relationships between countries and various trading-partnered groups of countries:

***THE COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS (CFR), at www.cfr.org.
>

*** WORLDBANK, at www.worldbank.org.
>

*** THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION (WTO), at www.wto.org.
>

*** THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND (IMF), at www.imf.org.
>

*** THE UNITED NATIONS, at www.un.org. It might prove worthwhile to procure a list of NGOs (NON-GOVERMENT ORGANIZATIONS/ OBSERVERS) with a presence at the UN. Many of these groups have tremendous resources as well as interesting ideologies regarding international commerce. Some sources of information on NGOs can be found at the following websites: www.globalpolicy.org/ngos, www.ngos.net, www.adb.org/NGOS, and www.gdrc.org/ngo.

*NGOs are playing an increasingly powerful role in lobbying for U.N. policy changes, and are becoming an increasingly well-capitalized and vociferous force in geopolitical economics. It has been said that the NGOs, acting in affiliation, constitute the beginnings of an alternative U.N., and perhaps a form of parallel government. Popular conspiracy-theorist and best-selling fiction author Dan Brown may well write a bestseller about this.

*** FUTURISTS! An excellent publication is THE TREND LETTER. It is a cutting-edge source of information about rapidly-changing technologies, consumerism patterns, international trade trends and important demographic data. The website for this publication can be found at www.briefings.com. Their economic forecasts are extraordinarily insightful.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATES AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE (FOREX) PROVIDERS --

*Should you choose to permit your customers to pay for their purchases in their local or domestic currencies instead of U.S. Dollars, transactions may become a bit tricky. This is especially true in situations where you may be dealing in a volatile (rapidly fluctuating) currency, or in a situation where a series of payments are to be made by your customer over time, which further increases your exposure to adverse foreign exchange risk. Having mentioned this, offering prospective customers the opportunity to pay in their own domestic currencies can often prove to be the reason that they will choose your company over a less accommodating competitor in your industry. The following websites relate to firms which either handle foreign exchange transactions or can provide hedging arrangements against declines in the relative value of your customer's local currency against the currency with which you pay your suppliers and other expenses. While fortunes are made (and lost) in FOREX trading, I am not a proponent of that activity here. The reason to use the services offered by those firms listed is not for speculation; quite the opposite, it is for ensuring stability in your international commodities-based transactions.

* To get some initial idea of the relative exchange rates between the various world currencies, you might visit www.ny.frb.org (THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF NEW YORK) or www.xe.com/ict, which is a very popular site. Bear in mind that quoted rates usually apply to large blocks of currency being traded, and do not account for the costs of actually transacting the exchange (e.g., brokerage commissions, etc.). Be very conservative in your pricing, and always allow some extra margin in your firm's favor to permit for the transactions costs commonly associated with smaller-sized transactions being undertaken for small- to middle-market companies.

NOTE: ~You may find the foreign-based currency exchange firms to be a bit more sophisticated, creative, and well-mannered than the U.S.-based firms. Then again, you might find them so incredibly snobbish and full of themselves that they won't even entertain a serious conversation with you. In these latter cases, saying things like "oh, quite brilliant, indeed", or "traffic around Trafalgar has become preposterous", or " I don't much care for Chaucer" might prove to be rapport-engendering. If you have a propensity to use profanity (as I do, especially when trying to do household repairs), say things like, "my word, but that's bloody awful." Whatever you do, try to remember that you are acting as this country's Goodwill Ambassador (which is not a paying position), and make a good impression. Nowadays, it's become increasingly difficult to be an American and be loved by anyone outside of the immediate confines of the United States. Please do all that you can to change this misperception, as I might want to travel abroad in the future.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETING SERVICES AND OTHER RESOURCES --

* Finding vendors and customers utilizing the Internet provides the instant gratification of quantity, with some serious issues regarding quality. Nonetheless, the possibilities abound for finding suppliers, customers, agents, distributors, co-venturers and single-time transactions by simply using investing some time daily on your computer. Occasionally, you may also glean some valuable ideas about where markets are headed, or certain tendencies, politically or economically, which may influence your business decisionmaking. ~MALAYSIA~MALAYSIA~MALAYSIA~

Malaysia is an amazing economic, social, cultural, and political entity unto itself. Although not as well-known or as appreciated as should be the case in the West, it is an underutilized and rapidly growing venue for importing, exporting, outsourcing and offshoring. MR. FRED PLIMLEY, who can be reached via direct email at f.plimley@dkmalaysia.com, is an expert facilitator at developing projects and relationships between Malaysian entities and U.S. - based organizations. He is a veteran of international business, and has access to the necessary officials and dignitaries to assist you in transacting profitable business, without all of the trial-and-error effort so often associated with trade attempts by neophytes. He is the President of DK Malaysia Development, LLC, and is Moderator of LinkedInMalaysia. His websites are excellently formatted, easily navigable, and very informative: www.dkmalaysia.com, www.linkedinmalaysia.com, www.dkinternet.com, and www.linksv.com/companySummarySp.aspx?co_idURL=34971, which last one you should commit to memory. On a serious note, all of MR. PLIMLEY's sites are worth visiting, and should you have reason to speak with him, please mention that you were referred to him through this blog. He truly is a gateway to business with and through Malaysia.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS AND INTELLIGENCE SOURCES --

*I thought that it would be a good idea to break the global economy up into general regions, so that you, Gentle Reader, could quickly click onto each of these sites and get a good view of the current status of the worlds of trade, business and capital markets with a minimum of time and effort invested. However, in order to make this protocol even more exciting (because intelligent persons appreciate a challenge!), I have not put these general regions in any type of alphabetical or other logical order. Please feel fully at liberty to alphabetize them, or index them by some demographic statistic that you find especially significant yourself if you wish...perhaps on a rainy afternoon, or when you have run out of crossword puzzles, Sudoku, or are not on speaking terms with your significant other. Have fun visiting these sites, and keep your mind open to the possibilities. Also, please let me know what you think of the lavender lettering. Your opinion is dreadfully important to me, and despite my coveted alpha-male status and blustery persona, I am very sensitive.

OTHER SITES OF INTEREST --

* There are a number of other websites that are dear to my heart, which I would recommend your looking at:

*** www.Execsolution.com. MS. MARGARET OREM, who runs this private management recruitment firm (she has referred to herself as a "headhunter", but in a "friendly" way), is a superbly resourceful networker who has access to a vast pool of both prospective deals (e.g., projects in need of inancing, or goods looking for purchasers) and facilitators (e.g., those parties involved in purchasing, financing or leasing). Although her organization is New York-based, she is networked worldwide. You may access MARGARET via email at margaret.orem@execsolution.com. Of course, you will do the proper and socially appropriate thing, and reference this Post when you communicate with her. I am trusting you.

*** www.mojavejet.com. If you have a prospective overseas purchaser of pre-owned used commercial aircraft, cargo planes, or engines, Mojave Jet Group, L.L.C. can be your best, most aggressive resource for 1) sourcing (e.g., finding the right aircraft), and 2) financing the purchase or lease for your customer. Speak with either MR. ERIC HAYMES or MR. BILL DELANEY, both of whom are great guys, and neither of whom has forced me, against my will, to say that.

*** PROVISORS - THE PROFESSIONALS NETWORK GROUP, at www.provisors.com/needswants/ndwDetail.asp? The site is interesting, the concept reasonably sound, and active, constant networking is an extremely important component to your ultimate success in any business endeavor. I must admit, that I always find it curiously funny when a website address ends in an "asp". This is probably attributable to my lack of computer coding and programming savvy.

*** GURU - at www.guru.com has become an increasingly popular resource for locating freelance talent, especially in the fields of web design, webmastering, graphic arts, writing and other types of communications and presentation-related work.

*** BLOOM REAL ESTATE GROUP, L.L.C. - at www.bloomreg.com. You might not know this, but Mr. Scott Bloom, President and Managing Member of the eponymous BLOOM REAL ESTATE GROUP, was able to find more than THREE errors (spelling and grammatical!) in the text of this post. Not very much gets by Scott. I strongly advise that you visit his website -- not only to find out about what his firm does (they are quite reputable, and Scott is a terrific guy), but to look for typographical and grammatical errors. In the event that you find any, please contact him directly at sbloom@bloomreg.com... better, still...contact me at FreeDECastle001@yahoo.com so that I can irritate him myself.

Visit their website at www.inboundlogistics.com/index.shtml, and email Ms. Morano directly for further information about INBOUND LOGISTICS, or about any other THOMAS products and publications (there are many of them, some of which I have used myself). She is quite knowledgeable, and very friendly. She is also the type of person who remembers birthdays and sends cards to clients (a rare and wonderful thing, especially in these troubled times).

TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION SERVICES --

COMMUNICAID LANGUAGE SOLUTIONS, www.communicaidinc.com, is an international agency which provides superb service, especially in dealing with highly-technical applications. They have a variety of innovative ambassadorial services, as well. Speak with Mr. Kip Madden.

WEB DESIGN, PROGRAMMING AND SEO (SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION) --

Speak with Mr. Michael Cordova, of 21st CENTURY TECHNOLOGIES, INC., www.21stsoft.com, or www.mercuryleads.com, to set up your firm's "virtual export division" on the web, and have it ranked at the top of the search engines to maximize site visits and potential sales.

FURTHER PERSONALIZED ASSISTANCE --

* If you have any questions or ideas about exporting, international co-venturing, structuring transactions or obtaining financing, I would be delighted to correspond with you in confidence. If I cannot personally or professionally provide you with what you need, I would be more than pleased to facilitate an introduction to the right party on your behalf. I do not mind being used as a "sounding board". I do a great deal of work in crafting customized types of international trade documents for exports who wish to contract with international agents, distributors, customers and financial institutions.

* IF YOU HAVE A SINCERE INTEREST IN CREATING A "VIRTUAL EXPORT DEPARTMENT" AS AN ADJUNCT TO YOUR DOMESTIC SALES MACHINE, I HAVE ACCESS TO SOME EXCELLENT WEB DESIGNERS, PROGRAMMERS, ADVERTISING PROS, FULFILLMENT SERVICES AND OUTSOURCED ADMINISTRATIVE HELP.
