"Political Posturing Versus Honesty - Domestic And International Sabotage."

In the ritual of politics, the art of deceit (either through lying, omission or conflictory action) is, apparently a necessity. Politicians want to announce what they they believe their respective constituencies want to hear ("on the record"), but their actions tell much more about what they truly desire. I have discussed this type of two-faced conduct more than once in The Internationalist Page Blog, and with numerous other blogs which I author through the TNNWC Blogosphere.

An Illustrative case-in-point follows: An entire legislative body vociferously condemns a president's participation in a military incursion, claiming an "abuse of a certain 'War Powers Act' " -- even citing that the president's action is unlawful as well as distasteful.

Ironically, after condemning the president's action by an overwhelming majority, the same representitives of the populace agreed to continue funding the 'allegedly legal' activity. This would seem to be tacit support of a military action that this same hypocritical pack of self-righteous and pedantic prevaricators had just condemned in the most severe terms.

House Spurns Obama on Libya but Does Not Cut Funds

The House of Representatives dealt a symbolic blow to President Obama on Friday by resoundingly failing to approve a bill authorizing the contentious military operations in Libya. But the House stopped short of a total desertion of a war-time president by also rejecting a measure to limit financing to support the military operations.

Dear Readers:

This posting represents a slight departure from my usual agenda. Having said this, those of you who know a bit about me will understand that sometimes a slight departure from our habits, patterns and repetitive tasks gives us a renewed and improved perspective.

The world is getting smaller, but is feeling terribly crowded and noisy, with so many voices crying out for attention -- some need humanitarian aid, some want to market us their products and services, and some want to express their feelings or promote their ideologies.

As an Internationalist and a Global Futurist, I see both obstacles and opportunities in this crowded but sometimes very lonely room.

With all of this talk about buzz-to-brand, social media, viral marketing and networking, we cannot afford to lose sight of the most important thing: Our sacred Humanity. This world can be whatever we choose it to be if we cooperate and collaborate. In a world where so many peoples are at war, so many are homeless and hungry, so many are suffering unexpected financial calamities, so many are still shaking from a spate of natural disasters...and where everyone is treading cautiously in a state of frightful uncertainty, we must build together.

Together... the only alternative is apart; and remaining apart has never created a civilization or initiated commerce.

Advocate and Navigate - Two Key Thematic Trends which will Shape Future Careers.

Dear Friends:

In the very near future, new types of entire businesses and their subsumed career paths will be concentrated in the fields (either singly or combined) of advocacy and navigation.

The first has to do with proactively representing and protecting the rights of potentially vulnerable individuals; the second has to do with finding, communicating with, coordinating and monitoring all of the parties and all of their efforts as may be required to achieve any complex and important goal.

These two categorical career "designations" address two major issues, both of which are increasing in magnitude daily (although in a world of largely decreasing expectations, people are very resigned to both of these growing problems, despite their kicking and cursing about "the System"):

We are living in an increasingly decentralized world, where there are more moving parts to virtually every social process, and more participants than ever before. With outsourcing, subcontracting and migration of businesses to cyberspace, many of the persons involved in any given process do not know eachother or communicate with eachother -- they are often functioning as a headless juggernaut, where no one person takes ultimate responsibility or internally manages a process from start to finish;

We are living in an increasingly de-personalized society, where people do not interact as emotionally, or with the same level of commitment to eachother as in earlier times. This is a function of self-defensiveness and insularity (more computer contact, less physical contact and body language exchanges). We feel, lamentably, that "every one of us much watch out for himself or herself, because others are doing the same."

Ultimately, these two new categories, used in the new senses of their respective meanings, serve as a means of re-centralizing and re-personalizing processes.

Experts are needed to advocate and navigate for us...we are an entire species trying desperately to cope with the difficulties imposed upon us by a combination of societal factors, including, but not limited to:

1. Increasingly complex technology versus an increasing percentage of older persons in the general population;

2. Increasing de-centralization compartmentalization and specialization of virtually every aspect of every service business, in both the private and public sectors -- no one individual guides a customer, consumer or client through any process from start to finish anymore;

3. Increasing subcontracting, outsourcing and offshoring, with multicultural miscommunications, reminiscent of the Tower of Babel;

4. Deterioration in customer information access, service and responsiveness due to automation and "pidgeonhole" menu choices...have you ever had a particular problem which you needed to speak with with a utilities company about, only to telephone the toll-free number and be given a choice of four options, none of which actually addressed your situation? After that, did you wait on the phone for what seemed like an eternity (not daring to hang up and lose your precious place in line) while listening to distorted and terribly over-orchestrated music with brief interruptions by some syntho-voice saying, "Please stay on the line. All of our representatives are busy serving other customers. You call will be answered in the order in which it was received. Your estimated waiting time is 20 minutes..."? Sometimes these calls add further injury to insult by adding a "canned" message saying something to the effect of, "Due to an unusually high volume of telephone calls, it might take a long time to have a representative speak with you. If you'd prefer, you can reach us at our website, at ---------------, or, if your call is not an emergency, call us at some other time?"

The patience required to deal with this type of manifest impertinence and impersonal treatment is something which I am having a difficult time cultivating.

I remember being able to call up the "operator" (a Humanoid) on the telephone to request a telephone number for a particular party. Now, I have to go online to find telephone numbers.

Simple requests for information have now become research projects, requiring a great deal of skill and determination.

4. A very low signal-to-noise ratio in the media barrage, combined with declining attention spans and impatience born of sensorial overload and obsessive multi-tasking (i.e., doing many things simultaneously without getting any single one of them completed to any reasonable standard of quality);

5. An increasingly fractionalized social structure with limited communication between components -- this means that each of us, individually has expend the effort to coordinate multiple parties as may be required in the circumstances;

6. An ever-increasing pile of convoluted and often highly confusing protocols, rules and regulations governing virtually anything which we ordinarily do in our lives. You simply cannot accomplish anything institutionally without working through a mountain of forms and other paperwork;

7. People have, to a great extent, lost touch with the notion of investing in long-term relationship-building. Our lives have largely become a staccato series of fleeting and impersonal interactions with others, with time at an ever-increasing premium. We have many "contacts" and very few functioning, responsive and compassionate relationships. We are, ironically, more isolated than ever before.

In sum, when someone about whom you care is: chronically ill; aging; dying; experiencing profound emotional problems; contending with substance abuse; in financial trouble; in legal trouble...etcetera...etcetera...you will need to find some ultimate decider and coordinator of the entire process.

You will need an ADVOCATE and a NAVIGATOR.

Dear Friends:

I am neither a fan of John Kerry's, nor of Bob Livingston's, but I find valuable information in unlikely places because I am always willing to listen, and to learn. Kerry, of the US, leans politically toward the Democratic Party and some ideologically imprecise progressivism (which some refer to as liberalism), while Bob Livingston, the publisher of The Liberty Alert and The Liberty Digest, is a self-professed ultra-conservative, right-winger. The two would seemingly have nothing in common, except that both do a great deal of speaking and promoting within their respective realms of expertise and in accord with their respective agendas for political and social change. Frankly, I find them both a bit annoying - but I am willing to listen to either of them, which is an important point.

The United States, the UK and a number of other nations have become increasingly concerned about the potential for Iran to build up significant nuclear weapons capabilities. Whether or not, any nation has a right to dictate policy regarding self-defense or military strategies to Iran or any other sovereign is another issue. But nonetheless, Iran's reputation for either condoning or sponsoring certain known terrorist organizations, as well as its internal political instability make it an object for concern throughout the Middle East, Asia, Europe and America.

While I do not believe that any nation (or any Human Being) should simply "do what it is told" by the established international community (e.g., the most powerful industrialized nations, plus a few smaller "roaring mice,"), I believe that Iran has made a terrible mistake in its refusal to honor a visit by Senator John Kerry until (through the Iranian Press) "The US changes its policies." This is useless petty political extortion, posturing, and anger-engendering. Imposing conditions by one country upon another before the first will grant an audience to the second sends a message of animousity, and it serves to lend further gravity to any negative feelings and suspicions. The temptation is then to escalate the hostilities on both sides until the scenario is like having a tennis volley with a time bomb as the ball.

Keep all doors wherein there is a possibility for productive, peaceful discussion open. Don't predicate a visit or conversation on an immediate policy change or action on the part of the other party -- a lack of open communication leads each side to suspect the worst of the other.

Ultimately, it comes down to this: Either engage in conversation, or augment the risk of eventual conflict.

Closing the doors to productive discussion can never be a good policy.

John Kerry Refused Permission To Visit Iran

Legislators in Iran have rejected top Sen. John Kerry’s (D-Mass.) request to visit the country, the media have reported.

According to TheHill.com, Iranian media have said that Kerry, who is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had submitted an official request to visit Tehran as an emissary.
Iran’s Fars News Agency has quoted Zohreh Elahian, a member of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, as saying that "The Islamic Republic of Iran has no plans to negotiate with any American official, unless [the U.S.] changes its policies," which was quoted by TheHill.com.

The Iranian news source also said that Parliamentary Speaker Ali Larijani advised Kerry to end America’s hostile policies toward his country, particularly regarding the nuclear issue.

When questioned by journalists, the senator’s spokesman, Frederick Jones, said no trip to Iran was planned at the moment.

The United States and Iran broke off diplomatic relations in the wake of the Iranian hostage crisis during which 53 Americans were held hostage for 444 days from 1979 to 1981 at the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The two countries have held no bilateral talks for the past 30 years, but after his inauguration President Obama suggested he was ready to start talks on normalizing the relations.
However, last September Obama, Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Great Britain and President Nicolas Sarkozy of France alleged Iran has covert plans to build an enrichment plant about 100 miles outside of Tehran, according to The New York Times. ####

Isolationism - A Dangerous Response to Economic and Emotional Depression.

The article cited below this brief commentary appeared c/o Yahoo News! and was carried by Associated Press (AP). It is a sad treatise in predictable human behavior. Isolationism breeds incestuous reaffirmation of ill-conceived and inbred ideas; increasing fear of change; decreasing flexibility and adaptability; reduced trading opportunities for economic stimulus; reduced opportunities to find new friends and allies for personal and professional growth in the individuals; suspicion and resentment amongst those who surround us in the Global Community but whom we cease to associate with or be concerned about; a culture of conformity, defensiveness and stagnation; and, a prolonged and deepened sense of loss in all quarters.

The isolationist road is a dangerous one for governments to take. Increased insularity amongst the population of a hurting nation, an apathy when it comes to affairs that are not in the immediate geographical locus and occuring only in the present moment (or in the anticipated tragedies of the near-term), and a dissociation from the greater world and potential future is tantamount to a return to feudalism. It is anti-evoluationry from the standpoint of beneficial individual and societal advancement.

Philosophically, the seeds of great change lie within us, to be found introspectively...but there exists an undeniable universe of greater possibilities in external exploration. We must employ both processes, and ignore neither.

As an Internationalist, as a Global Futurist, and as an ardent advocate of unlimited human potential, I am very fearful of the retreat and regression that invariably follows disappointment, or a loss of faith.

The channels of communication must be kept open. Curiosity and conversation must be encouraged. Sharing of greater amounts of information amongst a greater number of receptive minds (as in the collaborative aspect of the GICBC - The Global Interworked Cooperative Business Community) brings us closer to the "cerebral critical mass" needed to achieve breakthroughs for the improvement of the quality of life throughout all peoples of this world.

Let's not isolate. We must collaborate.

Poll: Isolationism soars among Americans

WASHINGTON – Americans are turning away from the world, showing a tendency toward isolationism in foreign affairs that has risen to the highest level in four decades, a poll out Thursday found.
Almost half, 49 percent, told the polling organization that the United States should "mind its own business" internationally and let other countries get along the best they can on their own, the Pew Research Center survey found. That's up from 30 percent who said that in December 2002.
Results of the survey appear to conflict with President Barack Obama's activist foreign policy, including a newly announced buildup of 30,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan to fight Taliban and al-Qaida extremists.
"Isolationist Sentiment Surges to Four-Decade High," the nonpartisan research center headlined its report on the poll about America's role in the world.
Only 32 percent of the poll respondents favored increasing U.S. troops in Afghanistan, while 40 percent favored decreasing them. And fewer than half, or 46 percent, of those polled said it was somewhat or very likely that Afghanistan would be able to withstand the radicals' threat.
Forty-one percent of those surveyed said the United States plays a less important and powerful role as a world leader than it did a decade ago, up from 25 percent who said that just before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the report said.
Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut said in an interview that the "very bad economy" appeared most responsible for the growth of isolationist sentiment. He said the public was also "displeased with the two wars we are waging, in Iraq and Afghanistan."
While isolationism and unilateralism reached four-decade highs among the public, the stature of China increased.
Among Americans polled, 44 percent said China was the world's leading economic power compared with 27 percent who named the United States. In February 2008, 41 percent said the U.S. was the leading economic power, while 30 percent said China.
A majority of Americans surveyed, or 53 percent, see China's emerging power as a threat to the United States.
The United States is seen by a comfortable majority, 63 percent, as the world's leading military power.
Concerning the Middle East, about half, or 51 percent, of respondents said they were more sympathetic toward Israel than to the Palestinians, who drew 12 percent. Fourteen percent supported neither side, while 19 percent offered no opinion.
The findings come from two surveys. The first poll, of 2,000 adults, was conducted by telephone Oct. 28 to Nov. 8 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. A subsequent poll of 1,003 people conducted from Nov. 12-15 had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
