Sorting Through "Extreme News" From Left, Right and Center - A Crucial Skill-Builder At Trend-Spotting and for Strategic Planning.

Remember: Today's radical or "impossible" idea may well become tomorrow's reality. You've seen it more than once in your lifetime.

Author's Note: Every entrepreneur, and every single emerging enterprise requires management, market research, marketing, publicity, branding and a constant re-evaluation of potential future trends. If you are so biased that you deliberately exclude (adversely select against) "radical" or "extremist" publications which don't conform to your pre-existing views, you will merely be recycling your own brand of stupidity -- some call this "the kindling of circular intelligence."  Get outside the coffin of comfort and look at what extremist, activist and super-partisan organizations are up to.

The key is to be open to information which comes from any and all sources...to be able to detach yourself emotionally from the political or other agendas of their writers, publishers and promoters, and to gather intelligence which may be actionable.

Every leader, manager, marketing director, financial officer, planning officer, product or service developer must be as an objective Information Hound, to the greatest extent possible.

If you limit your total news intake, you limit your knowledge base, thinking, insight, intellectual growth, analytic ability and efficacy, and ability to survive and thrive. I can read the SPECTATOR, MOTHER JONES, THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, BUZZFLASH BULLETIN and THE ROLLING STONE in one sitting. I can listen to NPR as well as a series of Sunday morning sermons, deluxe with sulfur and brimstone. I've watched Limbaugh and Bill Maher (but then again, I've also watched Dexter and Everyone Loves Raymond...) 

When it comes to the necessary job of futurism, more information is always better. Learn to expose your yourself to more input, while trusting that your character and judgment will not be hurt in the process. In fact, this testing will get you more in tune with who you truly are -- and that is a wonderful thing. - DC

Dear Readers:

Some interesting headlines and brief articles from some of the more "extreme" news sources (actually, in many cases these are more appropriately called conjecture sources) may prove to be a fountain of some useful information. Understand that in every article, there is a grain of truth (an initiating spark, fear, or observation which inspired the writer) and a large element of propaganda. The trick is to separate the elements of truth from the surrounding rhetoric. One of the means of doing this is by rudimentary correlative analysis....for example, if two politically opposed groups speak of the same subject and make similar observations about its implications, you might have unearthed a piece of truth.

If two adversaries agree on a common problem or a common trend -- it is invariably one worth watching. Finding these areas of informational intersection is one of a true intelligence analyst or Global Futurist's most important skills. I'll admit that sometimes it is a bit of a stomach-turner to read through the accusations, recriminations, bigotry and hate-speak. But the gold which you will pan from this stream of compost is still gold.

This is a great skill, and a great exercise. Use this analysis tool often, and your abilities to see through the smoke to the spark will increase appreciably.

Isolationism - A Dangerous Response to Economic and Emotional Depression.

The article cited below this brief commentary appeared c/o Yahoo News! and was carried by Associated Press (AP). It is a sad treatise in predictable human behavior. Isolationism breeds incestuous reaffirmation of ill-conceived and inbred ideas; increasing fear of change; decreasing flexibility and adaptability; reduced trading opportunities for economic stimulus; reduced opportunities to find new friends and allies for personal and professional growth in the individuals;  suspicion and resentment amongst those who surround us in the Global Community but whom we cease to associate with or be concerned about; a culture of conformity, defensiveness and stagnation; and, a prolonged and deepened sense of loss in all quarters.

The isolationist road is a dangerous one for governments to take. Increased insularity amongst the population of a hurting nation, an apathy when it comes to affairs that are not in the immediate geographical locus and occuring only in the present moment (or in the anticipated tragedies of the near-term), and a dissociation from the greater world and potential future is tantamount to a return to feudalism. It is anti-evoluationry from the standpoint of beneficial individual and societal advancement.

Philosophically, the seeds of great change lie within us, to be found introspectively...but there exists an undeniable universe of greater possibilities in external exploration. We must employ both processes, and ignore neither.

As an Internationalist, as a Global Futurist, and as an ardent advocate of unlimited human potential, I am very fearful of the retreat and regression that invariably follows disappointment, or a loss of faith.

The channels of communication must be kept open. Curiosity and conversation must be encouraged. Sharing of greater amounts of information amongst a greater number of receptive minds (as in the collaborative aspect of the GICBC - The Global Interworked Cooperative Business Community) brings us closer to the "cerebral critical mass" needed to achieve breakthroughs for the improvement of the quality of life throughout all peoples of this world.

Let's not isolate. We must collaborate.

Poll: Isolationism soars among Americans

WASHINGTON – Americans are turning away from the world, showing a tendency toward isolationism in foreign affairs that has risen to the highest level in four decades, a poll out Thursday found.
Almost half, 49 percent, told the polling organization that the United States should "mind its own business" internationally and let other countries get along the best they can on their own, the Pew Research Center survey found. That's up from 30 percent who said that in December 2002.
Results of the survey appear to conflict with President Barack Obama's activist foreign policy, including a newly announced buildup of 30,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan to fight Taliban and al-Qaida extremists.
"Isolationist Sentiment Surges to Four-Decade High," the nonpartisan research center headlined its report on the poll about America's role in the world.
Only 32 percent of the poll respondents favored increasing U.S. troops in Afghanistan, while 40 percent favored decreasing them. And fewer than half, or 46 percent, of those polled said it was somewhat or very likely that Afghanistan would be able to withstand the radicals' threat.
Forty-one percent of those surveyed said the United States plays a less important and powerful role as a world leader than it did a decade ago, up from 25 percent who said that just before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the report said.
Pew Research Center President Andrew Kohut said in an interview that the "very bad economy" appeared most responsible for the growth of isolationist sentiment. He said the public was also "displeased with the two wars we are waging, in Iraq and Afghanistan."
While isolationism and unilateralism reached four-decade highs among the public, the stature of China increased.
Among Americans polled, 44 percent said China was the world's leading economic power compared with 27 percent who named the United States. In February 2008, 41 percent said the U.S. was the leading economic power, while 30 percent said China.
A majority of Americans surveyed, or 53 percent, see China's emerging power as a threat to the United States.
The United States is seen by a comfortable majority, 63 percent, as the world's leading military power.
Concerning the Middle East, about half, or 51 percent, of respondents said they were more sympathetic toward Israel than to the Palestinians, who drew 12 percent. Fourteen percent supported neither side, while 19 percent offered no opinion.
The findings come from two surveys. The first poll, of 2,000 adults, was conducted by telephone Oct. 28 to Nov. 8 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. A subsequent poll of 1,003 people conducted from Nov. 12-15 had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Participants in the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) Annual Conference April 16-17 in Washington, D.C. will have the chance to engage in open dialogue on how the Bank can further refine its financing tools to help U.S. exporters and their lenders during the current international economic crisis. The Bank is chartered by Congress to help finance U.S. exports in order to help create and sustain U.S. jobs.
More than 1,000 U.S. exporters, domestic and international lenders, brokers, government representatives and foreign buyers are expected to attend the Bank's 75th Anniversary Annual Conference at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, with the theme "Export Finance: A Key To Economic Recovery."
"As the world begins to look beyond the troubles of today, the consensus is that trade, and thus trade finance, will be the cornerstone of rebuilding the world economy," said John A. McAdams, Ex-Im Bank chief operating officer and senior vice president, Export Finance. "Ex-Im Bank is fulfilling its Congressional mandate to supplement private sector trade finance, and has been modifying its financial products and introducing new initiatives to help U.S. exporters and lenders cope with today's market conditions."
Ex-Im Bank's total authorizations for the period Oct. 1, 2008-Feb. 28, 2009 have increased dramatically over the same period a year earlier. Working capital loan guarantees alone showed a more than 40 percent increase, and short-term insurance a 240 percent increase, during the period. Working capital guarantees are most often used to benefit small and medium-sized exporters.
"The Annual Conference will give us the chance to update our customers on the changes we've made and hear from them what more we can do, as well as give them outstanding networking opportunities," McAdams said.
In a "Dialogue with Stakeholders" on the opening day of the conference, McAdams and other Ex-Im Bank officials will invite exporters, lenders and other participants to address new ideas to enhance the Bank's products. In a separate seminar on Friday, Ex-Im Bank staff will explain in detail recent Bank initiatives and program enhancements designed to improve liquidity for U.S. exporters and lenders.
Speakers and panelists addressing the conference theme include: Abdallah S. Jum'ah, first Saudi Arabian President and CEO (Retired) Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco); John Krenicki, Jr., vice chairman, GE, and president and CEO, GE Energy Infrastructure; Josh Bivens, economist, Economic Policy Institute; Bob Davis, international economics correspondent, The Wall Street Journal; and Michael Moore, professor of economics and international affairs, George Washington University and former member of the Council of Economic Advisors.
In a plenary session on the second day of the conference, four former Ex-Im Bank chairmen will share their perspectives on Ex-Im Bank's role in the current financial crisis and the challenges that lie ahead: John A. Bohn, Jr. (1986-1989); John D. Macomber (1989-1992); Kenneth D. Brody (1993-1995), and James A. Harmon (1997-2001).
Conference workshops and panels will discuss a wide range of topics. Small businesses will explain "in their own words" how they are using Ex-Im Bank working capital loan guarantees, export credit insurance, and medium-term loan guarantees to compete in global markets. Ex-Im Bank officials and staff will explain ways that U.S. clean technology companies can use Ex-Im Bank financing to grow their exports in today's uncertain capital markets.
Major panels on export markets will include "India: Still Growing;" "Financing Services in the Middle East" covering Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries; "Colombia: A Market of Opportunity and Growth;" and "Africa: Opportunities in the Big 5 -- Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa."
Ex-Im Bank also will present small business awards to exporters, lenders and brokers for outstanding performances as Ex-Im Bank customers and partners.

Dear Friends:

It has now been estimated that membership on Facebook, the popular internet social medium, is large enough that if it were to declare itself a country, Facebook would be the SIXTH largest nation on the Planet. Cyberspace has neither geological nor temporal barriers -- it might just be that place where the "Collective Consciousness" potentiates reaching its critical mass, and perceivable changes in reality actually occur.

The individuals comprising the world's vast population are beginning to more closely resemble the cells in a giant organism. This is either for better (I hope), or for worse. In either case, the movement in this sociological and psychological direction is indisputable.
