Marketing Appeal: "Made In America"

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

U.S. Exports Month-By-Month, Commencing 2008 -- Douglas E. Castle -- The Internationalist Page

Marketing Appeal: “Made In America”
Once “Made In America” Was Simply An 'Inside' Patriotic Slogan;
But Today The Cachet Of “Made In The USA” Has become Very Magnetic For Attracting Foreign Consumers.
Originally Published In The Internationalist Page Blog

Increasingly, the “Made In U.S.A.” label is moving more foreign consumers (particularly wealthier consumers in emerging nations) to purchase American exports, especially fashion and luxury items. And this appeal is starting to drive foreign sales of other types of American-manufactured goods as well. The underlying motivation is status, and this status is associated with the overseas perception that Americans are a very wealthy people who spend a great deal on everything, without regard to cost. This bodes well for the U.S. Balance Of Trade, and for U.S. small- to medium-sized businesses who are in, or who are moving into, the export business.

The following is excerpted From a U.S. EX-IM Bank press release dated November 4th, 2014:
Washington, D.C. – Ex-Im Bank Chairman and President Fred P. Hochberg issued the following statement with respect to September’s export data released today by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) of the U.S. Commerce Department. According to BEA, the United States exported $195.6 billion of goods and services in September 2014.

“These numbers clearly demonstrate that products stamped ‘made in America’ are sought after in markets around the globe,”
said Hochberg. “Ex-Im Bank is proud to support U.S. exporters and their workers as they expand their sales in the global marketplace, and create quality, middle class jobs here at home.”

Exports of goods and services over the last twelve months totaled $2.3 trillion, which is 47.5 percent above 2009 levels, and have been growing at an annualized rate of 8.5 percent over the last five years.”
There has never been a better time to enter the export business (especially for durable goods and services) than at present. While there are excellent government guarantee, financing and informational programs available through the SBA, the Department Of Commerce and the U.S. EX-IM Bank, it is generally worth the relatively minimal expense of retaining a consulting firm or solo consultant who can assist you in navigating these government programs and positioning yourself with international representatives, agents, distributors, logistics services, customs guidance and the like.

Interestingly, while the cost of market entry into global business is very small, the widespread perception among many business owners is that moving into export is an expensive and time-consuming proposition requiring a great deal of travel and large credit facilities. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is quite any easy matter for virtually any producer of durable goods or non-geographically-centered services to establish a virtual export division. And both the credit facilities and the payment guarantees are easy to obtain if you utilize the services of a professional to get you started, systematized and running.

If more eligible businesses were to open virtual export portals, the private sector of the United States would be generating even more full-time jobs and contracting opportunities than it currently is. This is highly desirable.

Instead of merely looking toward overseas markets to source materials and to outsource labor, many U.S. Small- to medium-sized enterprises would be better served by selling their domestically-produced or generated products or services overseas at the market premium that emerging economic countries' consumers are more than willing to pay for the “Made In America” cachet.

If you or your company would like to get more information regarding the setting up of a virtual export division, please feel at liberty to contact the author by going to http://DouglasECastleConsultancy.com, or by clicking directly on http://bit.ly/CASTLEDIRECT. The time could not be better.

International Informational Breakthrough: Our Own Newspaper

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

In writing The Internationalist Page Blog, I cover topics which I think would 1) be of the greatest interest to my faithful (thank you!) readers, and 2) which have not been adequately covered by either the mainstream or the fringe media. As a Human (using the latter term loosely for Douglas E. Castle), I am partial and defensive regarding my own focus and my own opinion regarding international events, perils and profit opportunities.

In order to give my readers a richer, more broadly-based view of international events and implications, I have published a nifty weekly newspaper which you can access by just clicking on the large rectangular (and robin's egg blue) button right under my sign-off on this article. I'm doing this to keep you coming back and to give greater utility to my blog as a resource for you, but (being less mercenary for a moment) I am also doing it to give you a more extensive view of The Global Village and the coverage of its many events and possibilities by other authors and sources. Their focus, interpretation and choice of subject matter under the general umbrella of Internationalism may be very different than mine --- and that's why I believe that you are entitled to hear them. Information is important, and I believe that more information from a greater variety of sources is better for the purposes of learning.

Something NEW!

My purpose in writing this blog is to provide readers with my focus, opinion and commentary on certain events, paradigm shifts, important trends, and possible future scenarios -- as well as ways to provide for them, either by positively exploiting them or by exercising the most effective damage control. My writing is for my readers, but it is inadequate in terms of comprehensive coverage on the general categories of subject matter being discussed. I will now offer you much more than ever before. And yes, cousin Frankie, it’s still free.

Henceforth [snobby word, eh?] I'll be posting more article links to this site, as well as whole weekly newspapers or curated collections of articles to this site covering interesting news items gathered from all media to provide every reader with a broader, better view than just my own. While my original articles will continue to be posted, these weekly reviews will lend some needed external perspective to the things that I'm speaking about, and will cover areas where I haven't focused my own attention as an author and an executive. I also feel that views which are not necessarily my own must be given fair representation. My readers are intelligent enough to decide which views are the most sensible, and who they can best believe.

As always, thank you for reading me, and for sharing my articles and other materials with your networks of contacts, colleagues and friends across the ever-increasing variety of social networks through your bookmarking, toolbars and other sharing tools.

A first sampling of this new information follows right beneath my signature and the list of search terms for this article. Please read it, and I hope that you truly enjoy it.

Arab World: Most Powerful, Influential News Media

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

In these times of troubled relationships between the entire Arab World and the industrialized west, the escalating violence between Shiite (Shia) and Sunni Arabs, and political divisions between the Arab world with respect to Taliban, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah and various smaller but rapidly growing groups eager to fill a growing sense of a power and leadership vacuum, it is critical for any news analyst and any citizen diplomat or Internationalist to understand where the news and influence comes from to the peoples of this vast and strategically important region. An interesting article follows from the American Press Institute (API) which should certainly give us all pause for thought:
OFFSHORE
Facebook is the third-biggest news source inArab world (journalism.co.uk)
A survey by Northwestern University in Qatar finds Facebook is the third-most used news source after Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya. Two factors that may have affected those results are: (1) the importance of interpersonal sources of news and information in the 10 countries surveyed and (2) the mix of internet penetration, income and literacy rates.
+ Interactive site of the survey’sfindings and slides of the keyfindings (Northwestern)

---------------
 I personally do not care for Facebook (or for Mr. Zuckerberg for that matter), and I use it far less than such social media platforms as LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest. But there can be no disputing the fact that Facebook has the greatest general following amongst non-business users throughout the world. For its mix of features, I believe it is probably the "friendliest" source of comprehensive pedestrian internet communication in the world-at-large.

How Countries Rank In Education - OECD Report And Commentary

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Education was once believed to be the raw fuel needed to feed genius and success. Over the past decade, it has become an expendable line item on too many of the world's greatest countries' budgets. This says volumes about our priorities, and worse, about the future of our planet if this trend is not addressed.

This article excerpt follows from the Huffington Post regarding a report from the Organization For Economic Development And Cooperation (the OEDC):

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's "2012 Education at a Glance" report released today is a trove of education indicators.

By analyzing the education systems of the 34 OECD member countries and eight others, the report makes a number of global education comparisons. The United States, for example, is the fifth most educated country in the world, with 42 percent of those aged 25 to 64 having attained some level of higher education. American students, however, were also found to struggle more than their foreign peers to top their parents. The odds of a young person reaching a level of education higher than that of their parents is a mere 29 percent, one of the lowest levels among OECD countries.

The findings bring to mind previous OECD findings based on its Program for International Student Assessment, an international exam for 15-year-olds. In 2009, students in Shanghai who took the PISA for the first time outscored every other school system in the world.

On the same exam, American students ranked 25th in math, 17th in science and 14th in reading -- often behind countries like Finland, China, Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong.

 "The brutal fact here is there are many countries that are far ahead of us and improving more rapidly than we are," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan told Bloomberg at the time. "This should be a massive wake-up call to the entire country."

Could you pass the test? Test your skills with some sample questions asked of 15-year-olds on the PISA, courtesy of the American Enterprise Institute.

Are you smarter than a 10th grader? [read this entire article]
####

What troubles me most about this publicly-available report is that the quality of education and expenditure on education in some of the great (and formerly great) industrial nations is declining, while their corresponding military expenditures are increasing as a total proportion of GDP. This does not speak well of our priorities.

It seems that too many of these big, but fiscally troubled, governments have made some correlative studies and have just neglected to share their results with us:

1) Education is not as important as a strong military;
2) Advancement in careers is no longer related to academic performance;
3) That militarization (and not entrepreneurship and education) is still a major way by which to bolster a flagging economy;
4) There is a growing "brain drain" in the most militarily powerful countries;
5) That the greatest minds of the future will be domiciled outside of the established industrial powers, and innovation, entrepreneurship and incentives will grow in the emerging nations while they all but evaporate in the older, floundering industrial behemoths.

I believe, speaking as the author of The Internationalist Page Blog, that we are heading toward a world which will be dependent upon less-educated persons and more aggressive military policies.

Better said, and speaking just for myself as Douglas E. Castle, "We had better win the war against ignorance before we start waging wars due to stupidity."

Thank you, as always for reading me, and for sharing my articles with your associates and colleagues using the clarion trumpet of social media.

Chemical Weapons, The UN, Impotence And Irrelevance - Syria

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

THE SAGA OF SYRIA'S HIGHLY TOXIC GASEOUS EMISSIONS

Every civil, reasonable Human Being with a modicum of compassion and a sensitive conscience abhors the use of chemical weapons. Similarly. the countries comprised of these civil Human Beings generally raise a hue and cry over news about chemical weapons. When they were used under the Hussein administration by Iraq troops on innocent civilians, there was a outcry by 'less barbaric' nations. When they were first used during WWII in Europe, reasonable, sentient, peace-loving people's throughout the world were appalled. Chlorine, Mustard Gas, Phosgene, Ricin, and other gaseous or particulate toxins have a high rate of fatalities, are impossible to contain (with an unpredictable range of effect depending upon wind and other natural factors), and will invariably produce terrible, long-lasting effects.

Now we'll explain the justification for the clever title of this article: Chemical Weapons, The UN, Impotence And Irrelevance - Syria.

Recently the United Nations Foundation Newsbrief came out with this bit of news regarding the alleged (and probable) use of poison gas in Syria:

Ban decries alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria

The Syrian government and rebels are accusing each other of using chemical weapons. In response, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that he "remains convinced that the use of chemical weapons by any party (in Syria) under any circumstances would constitute an outrageous crime." GlobalPost.com/Agence France-Presse (3/19)

---------------
Here's a probable scenario, and I hope that I am wrong:

1) The UN has meetings and issues repeated pronouncements against the Assad Regime, re-stating the theme that a solution should be peacefully negotiated between the rebels faction (now recognized by much of the world as a viable alternative government);

2) Syria continues to do exactly what it's doing, and the world community becomes increasing with the UN, as the UN is an articulate mouth with very limited resources or abilities to make any threat which is truly effective. The UN drops yet another notch in the world's perception;

3)  Israel, perceiving a direct threat and realizing that the UN will not do anything to assist them from the outflow or Syrian refugees, or from the overflow of Syrian violence, will surgically strike at poison gas manufacturing and storage facilities, as well as at other military targets in Syria. The UN will probably issue some statements to Israel about its "meddling" while quietly praying to a number of deities that the Syrian crisis will end with Israel still to be cursed for what it does to protect itself, and a number of its Arab neighboring nations;

4) Israeli - Palestinian peace and territory negotiations will waver under this pressure, and there will be increased violence in Gaza;

5) The U.S., believing that some of of the supplies and support for the current Syrian Regime are being facilitated by Moscow, will commence a re-visitation of a limited, superficial cold war (comprised mostly of rhetoric, while there is still money to be made through some cooperation between the two powers) will commence.

6) The U.S. will ultimately end up (for reasons of its long-known 'evangelism of Democracy' by carrot and stick ["silver or lead"] methods, and due to its need to prop up employment statistics and use the outdated theoretical premise that war will stimulate the domestic economy and unite the country -- just ask Dick Cheney, possibly America's first true cyborg...) deploying ground troops in Syria.

7) The international but rhetorical backlash against the United States by the Islamic nations and by the United Nations will result in an angry exchange of soundbites, pontifications and condemnations. Despite this, the United States and its increasingly insecure and economically burdened "allies" will continue to try to impose democracy in Syria. Iran will condemn the Western aggressors, and Israel (of course - its a tradition) as enemies waging a war against all of Islam.

As for The Internationalist Page Blog, we'll just watch this and see how it plays out.

Don't make bets or engage in illegal gambling :-)
